What is Pleural Thickening?

Pleural Thickening is a lung disease caused by exposure to Asbestos. It usually causes scarring or calcification of the lungs as well as a thickening of the pleura (lining of the lungs). Every type of asbestos can cause pleural thickening and a relationship between the amount of exposure to the severity of the condition has been established.

What Are The Symptoms of Pleural Thickening?

Symptoms for Pleural Thickening vary from person to person but can include pains in the chest and breathlessness. Due to the thickening of the lung lining and its other effects sufferers can find a significant reduction in lung capacity however symptoms most often always start with an inflammation of the pleura. Please note that it is usually 20-40 years since exposure to asbestos before symptoms occur.
