Hidden Killer Campaign
Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibre that has been used in various industries for over 50 years. Asbestos is a good insulator and has good fire protection properties. Asbestos could be present in any building that was built or refurbished before the year 2000.
As part of the ‘Hidden Killer’ Campaign the HSE website has published ‘Real Life Stories’ written by those diagnosed with asbestos related conditions such as Mesothelioma, some of the stories come from relatives who have lost loves ones because of asbestos related illnesses. The accounts highlight how asbestos was used daily in a variety of industries such as plumbing, building and construction and highlight the lack of protection previously available for tradesmen.
Asbestos related illnesses accounts for 4000 deaths per year in the United Kingdom.
