Firm fined £40,000 Over Allergic Dermatitis Case

Alergic Dermatitis
A rubber seal supplier company to food manufacturers have received a fine of £40,000 plus costs of £6,529 after one of their employees suffered an allergic reaction to his skin which caused Allergic Dermatitis. In January 2014, the employee was exposed to ingredients in the rubber compounds he was handling, these ingredients proved to be sensitive to his skin which caused an allergic skin reaction.

An HSE investigation found the firm were liable for their employee’s condition as they had failed to assess the risks involved to their employee when he was being exposed to the product. The company also failed to manage both the employee and products effectively which could have prevented the employee from suffering a reaction. The company accepted liability and pleaded guilty to breaching section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 at Hereford Magistrates court.

What is Allergic Dermatitis?

Allergic Dermatitis is a red itchy rash or inflammation of the skin and in some cases even bleeding skin. This could be caused by the improper use of substances people come into contact with on a daily basis at work and unfortunately it goes on to cause an allergic reaction. The inflammation or rash isn’t life threatening but it can cause great discomfort. Allergic Dermatitis can affect anyone who comes into repeated contact with substances which prove sensitive to their skin.

Substances which can cause Allergic Dermatitis include:

  • Fabrics and clothing
  • Rubber compounds
  • Perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and moisturisers
  • Shaving lotions
