In what type of industry can back injuries occur?
Thousands of people every year suffer from back injuries as a result of their working environment and more importantly because of their employers negligence.
Cumulative back injuries are more akin to claims for disease rather than a claim for a one off injury to the back, although in some cases both can be claimed for at the same time on a separate basis. This is because an injury such as a cumulative back injury, just like a disease, is often caused by harmful exposure over a number of years ie the injury cumulates.
Usually this harmful exposure will consist of a physical activity that, as a result of adverse posture and/ or force, results in pain or injury to the back.
It is also the case however that a back injury can result from the exacerbation of a pre-existing back injury. This means then that a person who in the past may have suffered from a none-work related back injury may still be entitled to claim for a work related back injury/ cumulative back injury. This is providing that the none-work related back pain or injury has persisted or worsened as a result of that person’s exposure to his or her working environment.
Although a back injury can occur in any occupation where the back is put under strain, below are a number of the more common working environments and industries where back injuries occur:
- Construction Industry
- Factory Work
- Warehouse Workers
- Kitchen Fitters
- Rail Industry
- Fabrication/Heavy Industry
