HSE implements impromptu inspections in food manufacturing
On 2nd January, the Health and Safety Executive announced a stringent inspection programme targeting the food manufacturing industry, starting from the date of the release of the news.
The two key ill health issues they will look for are occupational asthma, caused by exposure to flour dust, and musculoskeletal disorders caused by manual activities and repetitive actions.
HSE has warned food manufacturers that they face severe penalties if the inspections find their health and safety practices wanting.
According to HSE, “Exposure to flour dust is the UK’s second most common cited cause of occupational asthma. MSDs are the most common type of work-related illness in food manufacturing with handling injuries, accounting for around 20% of reported employee injuries (RIDDOR). “
HSE’s head of Manufacturing Sector John Rowe, said: “The food manufacturing sector is made up of over 300,000 workers and its health and safety record needs to improve. This inspection initiative will look to ensure effective management and control of targeted health risks.”
Symptoms of Occupational Asthma are the same as Asthma, these include:
- Shortness of breath
- Wheezing & coughing
- Constricted chest movement
- Asthma attacks
Occupational Asthma is not always a permanent condition, in many cases once the individual has distanced themselves from exposure to the triggers it can often subside. If you have suffered from any of the symptoms above we recommend that you visit your GP and notify them of your problem, they will then be able to identify causes and possibly change our medication.
A musculoskeletal disorder affects the muscles, joints, tendons or spinal discs. Musculoskeletal disorders are the most common type of work-related illnesses amounting to 41 per cent of all workplace sicknesses. They include neck and back pain, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive strain injury.
If you suffer from occupational asthma or a musculoskeletal disorder as a result of your work or workplace, you are entitled to claim compensation for any medical and financial problems caused by the condition.
