ITV News discovers growing danger of dumped asbestos

A report by ITV News has revealed the worrying increase in dumped asbestos around the country.   Freedom of information requests by ITV News showed 3,222 asbestos fly-tipping incidents this year, a rise of 14% since 2014.

The material is dumped in public spaces, in parks, churchyards and near schools.  It is believed the culprits include criminal gangs and ruthless construction workers, as well as the general public.

Exposure to asbestos can cause fatal diseases such as mesothelioma and pleural thickening.  Most sufferers have worked with the substance, often decades earlier, but other sufferers were never aware that they had been exposed to it. Asbestos is still in place in many public buildings including schools and hospitals. According to the National Union of Teachers, 319 teachers have died from mesothelioma since 1980.

If you think that you are suffering as a result of asbestos exposure in your past or present workplace, you may be able to make a claim for asbestosis compensation.

  • Pleural Thickening £25,000 to £51,500
  • Asbestosis £31,500 to £69,500
  • Lung Cancer £51,500 to £69,500
  • Mesothelioma £35,000 to £83,750
