Action Mesothelioma Day and RJ’s Asbestos Tips
Friday 3rd July marks the annual – Action on Mesothelioma day, set up to raise awareness of deadly condition and asbestos related cancers. Local support groups across the UK are teaming together to hold talks, conferences and breakfast events in order to highlight the dangers of the condition and the effect it has on the victims and their families.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a form of lung cancer directly caused by exposure to asbestos particles. It is very aggressive and sadly there is no specific cure although there are developments in this area which can be found here [1].

Who does mesothelioma affect?

It mainly affects people who have worked around asbestos for their occupation however it can also impact people who have not worked around the deadly substance such as family members who may wash overalls of workers or teachers who use classroom’s that still contain asbestos. The condition may not develop for a number of years (known as the latency period) which means it is extremely difficult to identify if someone will develop the condition later in life.

The impact of Mesothelioma

Apart from the illness causing havoc to a victim’s respiratory system and overall well-being, the condition leaves big gaps in people’s families and lives. Life expectancy from diagnosis can be extremely short (6 months in some occasions) meaning that people do not have time to prepare for anything including financial implications for their families not to mention the grief it causes.

The most recent figures reported by the HSE showed that over 2,000 people die from mesothelioma in the UK every year. This figure is expected to rise in the coming years and is predicted to peak around the year 2020 [2].

Action on Mesothelioma Day

The day itself is a great way to get involved and support local members of your community who may have been affected by Mesothelioma. To be involved, the UK’s charity group – Mesothelioma UK, are advising to get in touch with your local asbestos support to see what is happening in your area [3].
